'Design & Make In India'
vs
'Make in India'

A discussion with a very fine gentleman today, triggered a thought in my mind.
To put it crisply it goes, “The essence of design and make, as opposed to ‘only replication’ ”.

We as a country are proud of the industrial outputs that we are achieving with year on year growths to show.

After successful replication of goods and services, we even claim that all of our produce is alike and will function the same way in adherence with the high product standards.

And there is nothing wrong in having a workforce that replicates and produces for you at an increasing pace each year.

Let me take you to the other side of the story.
One might wonder, How much of this produce is being designed by your firm?

Are we  replicating something that was conceived by someone sitting outside your country? Are your creative ideas being outsourced to a think tank abroad?

It is not only important to make it in India. In my opinion, it is also important to envision and design it within India.
Because when we truly adopt the 'Design and Make in India' approach, we will give wings to free thought and freedom to break from routine of mindless duplication.

We will have a workforce that doesn't just do what it is told, or replicate someone else's success, but rather paves way for a new way of doing old things.

Isn't that the way we get simplified and advanced approach to an old problem ?

It starts with an individual, steps up to an organization followed by social acceptance of the trend, eventually leading to a country which values and believes in the importance of design as much as produce.

BTW, I am proud to be working with Newgen Software that has adopted the design and make in India concept, well before it became an initiative at a National level.

What are your thoughts on this?

Government Shared Service Centers

Last time, I had written about the essence of Think, Design & Make in India, as opposed to Make in India. This time, I would like to talk about an environment where the Government Back Office Processes are being handled by a Central & State Government run shared services organization. This could be run leveraging the Federal & State owned infrastructure respectively, which are governed & driven by the Nodal IT agencies, as they already are the backbone of state wide IT & functional operations. They bring together the repetitive back office work and enable it to be done far more efficiently by dedicating key resources who do a specialized job. Due to the large amount of document load, they should be able to make it a profitable venture. What all could be covered? HR, Finance, Operations, IT kind of shared services which are setup and run by the government. Key back office tasks like Payroll Processing, Leave Approval, Hire-to-Ret...
